Plastic surgery risks

Although cosmetic surgery has a very low risk of complications every type of surgery does have risks and complications can arise especially where anaesthesia is involved, in fact most complications are due to general anaesthetic. The most common complications are:

The thread lift

The thread lift is a less evasive form of cosmetic surgery which boasts quicker recovery times, leaves less scarring and is generally considered to be a quick fix solution. The thread lift can be performed in an hour and as it doesn’t reach the deeper layers of skin and only a local anaesthetic is needed, recovery time is quicker than many traditional surgeries.

The tummy tuck – abdominoplasty

The tummy-tuck or abdominoplasty which is the correct medical term for this type of surgery is the removal of excess fat and skin from the lower and middle abdomen and is a procedure in which the abdominal muscles of the stomach will be tightened. It is a procedure that can help dramatically change and reduce the appearance of those with problems of a protruding stomach, however it does leave a scar and the severity of it will depend on the surgeon involved and also the problem that initiated the surgery and extent of the surgery itself.

Tumescent technique – Liposuction method

This is a relatively new method of liposuction that is used in order to reduce post-operative bruising, swelling and pain. The technique is also used to avoid the need for a blood transfusion as blood loss is minimized using this method. With the tumescent technique, the excess fat is injected with a large amount of anaesthetic liquid before the liposuction is performed. This liquid will then cause the fat to become swollen and firm, this then allows the cannula to travel more smoothly underneath the skin as the fat is removed.

Choosing a plastic surgeon

With cosmetic surgery gaining in popularity more and more over the last few years, some types of cosmetic surgery are now a much more common procedure and are no longer just for the rich and famous. With any licensed physician being able to call themselves a cosmetic surgeon it is important you make the right choice when considering who to go with for you procedure.

Finding a surgeon that is a registered member of cosmetic and plastic surgery is a must as surgeons who are listed with a board of cosmetic surgery will normally have had specialised training in the field and will have had at least five years of surgical training and two years training in the field of cosmetic or plastic surgery.
